The South Dakota Natural Heritage Program collects and manages detailed information on plants, animals and ecosystems and develops information, data management tools, and conservation services to help meet species and habitat conservation needs. Lists of animal and plant species, plant communities, and unique natural features are identified by individual Heritage Programs to fulfill these services.

Species of Greatest Conservation Need: animal species were identified as species of greatest conservation need to help assess the successful implementation of the South Dakota Wildlife Action Plan. The list includes species that are state or federal listed or under consideration for federal listing as threatened or endangered species; species for which South Dakota represents an important part of the remaining species’ range; and a species with characteristics that may make it vulnerable
